Matt's Point
Matt was on a profound spiritual journey, in the last few years of his life especially. I had the great privilege of having him in my meditation classes and retreats over the last five years, including several combination hiking/meditation retreats in and around Zion National Park, in southwestern Utah. Matt had a favorite meditation spot there, out on some rocks jutting above an amazing valley and view. He called it 'the mothership', and we returned to it on every retreat held in the area. This past weekend Matt had been scheduled to attend another retreat there, and those of us who went returned to this spot in honor of him, and christened it "Matt's point".
Here are directions from the 15 North for anyone who would like to visit it. It is about 2 hours past Las Vegas.
- From the 15 North go past St. George, and past the main Zion National Park turn-off (which is exit 16) to exit 40, Kolob Canyons area.
- Stop at the visiter center to show your parks cards or pay the entrance fee, and to get a map if you like.
- Drive to the very end of the scenic drive, to the Timber Creek Overlook. Follow the 1/2 mile trail up to the peak. At the top, there is a loop - veer to the left side of the point.
- At the farthestmost point, there is a grouping of rocks jutting out over the valley (shown in the picture.) This is Matt's point, where he would climb out and meditate.
