Joanna Harris was a beloved mother to Peter Harris and Elizabeth Hussey, a loving Nanna to John and Janie and an adoring aunt to seven nephews and nieces.

Joanna grew up on a farm near Omaha.  As a child she was very diligent and caring. She married our father Michael Harris, when she was 20 – he lived three houses away from where she grew up. Peter was born in 1958 and Lizzy two years later.  She was a perfect mom and a great friend during our difficult teenage years – especially since Dad traveled a lot.  Mom and Dad divorced in 1980.  Three years later Joanna found love again and married our step dad Henry Pillars.  She seemed happy again. Henry passed away three years ago and after Henry’s death she seemed a bit lost.  But we know that she is at peace now with our Lord.

Mama, I hope you are watching us from above, seeing how much we miss you!  And we want to thank you for everything you have done for us and wanted to make sure that through this memorial John and Janie, and all your nieces and nephews and others yet to come, will never forget you.

Love,

Peter and Lizzy

  • I was thinking about this when helping Janie with her English assignment. When we were young, she made sure that we never missed a day of school. Even though she never went to college, she valued education and told us that education was one thing no one could ever take away from us. We are what we are thanks to her! We miss you Mama!

  • I was only six when I first met Aunt Joanna ten years ago. She was in town to attend a wedding and had stopped by at our house for a couple of hours before her flight back. When she realized that I was starting kindergarten the next day , she dropped everything, ironed all my clothes so that I would look great and baked me a batch of my favorite cookies. She said it was probably the most important day for me and she was going to make it very special. Such a loving aunt she was!

  • I love the pictures! Peter and Lizzy, do you guys remember the time when your Uncle James and I visited you at your Hill View house? Our flights were horribly late and we did not reach your home till midnight. Joanna made sure we had a nice dinner when we got home and then woke up at 5 AM to drive Lizzy to her ice skating class and then came back to cook breakfast for all of us. She had a great heart!
