Walks and Talks with Nanni
LE NOSTRE PASSEGGIATE
Questa è la foto che preferisco di quelle fatte con Nanni. Non è una bella foto, ma mi ricorda momenti tra i migliori di quelli passati insieme: le passeggiate durante i nostri soggiorni a Crans (a Natale e d'estate, anche se la foto è fatta nel campus della JHU), dove avevamo l'abitudine di andare quasi ogni giorno in paese per comprare l'Herald Tribune e prendere un caffè.
Lungo la strada e poi seduti al bar, parlavamo di tutto un po' e per me era anche un'occasione per esporgli i miei problemi e chiedere consigli.
A volte si parlava della nostra famiglia: i ricordi (di cui Nanni era un ricco testimone) o un commento sui fatti più recenti che la riguardavano.
Altre volte parlavamo della situazione italiana e della difficoltà di vivere in un Paese così "degenerato". Spesso ne derivavano piccole "lezioni" di politica ed economia, per me preziose occasioni di arricchimento.
Non essendo la mia materia, ho sempre avuto difficoltà nel seguire Nanni attraverso i suoi libri ed il suo lavoro e questo mi è sempre dispiaciuto; ma le sue analisi ed il modo di rendere semplici anche i concetti più difficili, rendevano più facili le cose. Questo, credo, insieme alla sua disponibilità ed alla sua passione, ha reso così apprezzato Nanni in ogni parte del mondo.
A tutti noi Nanni ha dato anche un'ultima, grande "lezione" di vita: il modo con cui ha affrontato la malattia. Sereno e determinato, cercando di dare forza a chi gli era vicino e la sua forza e i suoi insegnamenti mi mancheranno, ma rimangono nel cuore di chi l'ha conosciuto.

WALKS AND TALKS WITH NANNI
Of all the foto's of Nanni this is my favourite. It's not a particularly great foto, but it reminds me of the best moments that we spent together: excursions during our Christmas and summer holidays spent at Crans (although the foto itself was taken on the JHU campus) when we would walk into town to buy the Herald Tribune and drink a coffee.
Along the road and sitting at the bar, we would talk about anything and everything and for me these were precious occasions in which to discuss my various problems and get his advice.
Sometimes we would talk about our family: childhood memories (of which Nanni was a valuable fountain of knowledge) or comments on the most recent developments which concerned us.
Other times we would talk about the situation in Italy and the difficulties of living in a country which had "deteriorated" so far. Often these would result in "lessons" on politics and economy, more precious occasions when he would enrich my knowledge and understanding.
As Nanni's chosen subjects were not mine, I found it difficult to follow him through his books and his work, and this has always saddened me; however his analyses and clear explanations of even the most difficult concepts, made everything so much more understandable. I think these qualities, together with his passion and his approachability, are what has made Nanni so highly regarded and respected throughout the world.
Nanni also gave us one last "lesson" in life - the way in which he confronted his illness: serene and determined, he gave strength to those closest to him and this strength and his guidance are what I will most miss, but they will endure in the hearts of all those who knew him.
