  • It is just amazing how many different looks we can have! Especially the camping photo, but also the black and white photo sitting with the 3 kids on the couch, hardly look like Barbara at ALL to me! What a rich beauty she still is.

This Special Award of the American Society for Cybernetics is awarded to Barbara Vogl for outstanding contributions to the nurturing of cybernetics. Barbara Vogl’s vision of cybernetics and systems theory for the masses, her unrelenting and creative pursuit of the unusual, and her keen sense for recognizing new connections have made Patterns a rich source of tools and concepts to practice committed engagement with and within the social world. As editor, her unassuming, yet probing, interview technique has illuminated ideas and people who would otherwise remain unappreciated. Under the influence of Barbara’s consistent and contagious enthusiasm for cybernetic inquiry, the content and publication processes of the Patterns newsletter have embodied cybernetics not only as a way of thinking but as a way of being. True to this form, countless ASC members have benefitted from the experience of Barbara’s curiosity and invitations. Recognizing her warm demeanor, inquisitive personality, dedication, and innumerable contributions to the cybernetics community, the ASC hereby makes this Special Award toBarbara Vogl. While she has a special interest in the practice of the “spiritual”, it has been Barbara’s spirit that has caught our attention and imagination. We are grateful for her contributions, which will surely inform new iterations of ASC membership for years to come.
