Amy Garrett

2003 National Freeman Tilden Award Winner!

On November 13, Park Ranger Amy Garrett was presented the Freeman Tilden Award at the National Association for Interpretation Workshop in Sparks, Nevada for implementing a creative real-time distance-learning program through the use of fiber optics that brings the Homestead National Monument of America to urban and rural Nebraska audiences. This program allows thirty-five schools and 3,000 students throughout urban and rural Nebraska to interact with the rangers and staff at Homestead National Monument of America in real time at various locations in the Monument.  Ms. Garrett has applied her extensive knowledge of traditional interpretive techniques through the use of modern electronic media.  She established a formal cooperative agreement to work with the Nebraska Educational Services Unit #5, K-Nection Star Schools Administrators and Dark Fiber Solutions to implement this fine program.  The creation of a mobile cart with the necessary computer and camera equipments makes this all possible. Ms. Garrett has given numerous formal presentations on the project to the Nebraska Teachers Association, Nebraska Educational Task force, and the National Rural Education Association.  She has successfully woven long distance applications into the overall interpretive and educational program at the Monument and has met state and national curriculum standards.

In commenting on the program, Homestead National Monument of America’s Superintendent Mark Engler reflected, "The Monument is part of the Midwest Region of the National Park Service."
